“The Mouth” is back! It’s been an amazing year for Mike Matusow, who has seen his ups and downs in the poker world since Black Friday. The 45-year-old poker pro started off the year with a win in the NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship for $750,000. On Friday, he followed that up by winning his fourth career gold bracelet in event no. 13 of the World Series of Poker.
Matusow defeated a field of 210 players in the $5,000 seven-card stud eight-or-better event, claiming a first-place prize of $266,503, which puts him over the seven-figure mark for the year. He now has over $8.5 million in career tournament earnings, putting him in 27th place all time.
Matusow’s four bracelets put him into a tie for 22nd place with players such as David Chiu, Artie Cobb, Mickey Appelman, Puggy Pearson, Lakewood Louie, Tom McEvoy, Bobby Baldwin, Huck Seed, Bill Boyd and Amarillo Slim.
Matusow, who has final tabled the WSOP main event twice, admitted that he hasn’t always been responsible with his money, but that he was happy to be back on top.
“Yeah, I’ve blown most of it,” he said. “But it’s never been about money for me. When my head is on straight, I really believe I’m the best in the world. Nobody can beat me when I’m playing my A-game.”
