Woe! 650-Foot Las Vegas Roller Coaster on The Strip?

Hold on to your hats. There may be another Las Vegas roller coaster headed for the Strip, offering another attraction for risk-loving thrill seekers. Amusement ride company, U.S. Thrill Rides, plans to spend $100 million on building what they call a “Polercoaster” near the Tropicana Hotel on the Strip.

The 650-foot tall Las Vegas roller coaster would be the tallest in the world and would be a combination of a ride and an observation tower with stunning views of Las Vegas. In April, U.S. Thrill Rides submitted plans to the Federal Aviation Administration to build the tower-like coaster.

A Polercoaster installation consists of a large tower structure which featured glass elevators to an observation deck, as well as an El Loco steel roller coaster wrapping around the tower. The model was first introduced in 2012. US Thrill Rides‘ Bill and Michael Kitchen invented the concept to allow amusement parks with little available space to be able to design a full-size roller coaster.

In November of 2014, Mr. Kitchen had licensed the Florida rights for his invention to Skyplex, where it was announced the first Polercoaster would’ve been the tallest roller coaster in the world, called the “Skyscraper”, and would be built by 2017. However, the project had not broken ground and had not opened as of 2020.

The FAA is still determining whether the planned Las Vegas roller coaster will be a hazard to flights coming in and out of nearby McCarran International Airport. Company President Kitchen is optimistic about his plans for the addition to the Las Vegas skyline.

Mr. Kitchen told the Las Vegas Review Journal, “Since Las Vegas is one of the top tourist destinations in the world… We think it will get higher visibility and foot traffic than other places.”
