Australian Gambling – We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – there’s a right way and wrong way to go about promoting your business to your customers.
William Hill look to have gone about things the wrong way lately.
The betting giant has caused outrage and attracted thousands of complaints after internet users found themselves being unwittingly directed to a William Hill app in the Apple App Store this past week.
Websites such as The Mirror Online, The Guardian, Huffington Post, Sky Sports, Radio Times and even competitor’s like Betfair saw visitors directed to the page to buy a William Hill app, seemingly because an auto-directing code found its way into the inner-workings of the sites.
Thousands of users took to Twitter and Facebook to complain about the unwanted links and the fact that their iPhone’s crashed soon after being taken to the unwanted page.
William Hill has responded this week by stating that the links and pop-up ads were not intentional and could be caused by a set-up fault with one of their suppliers.
Jem Maidment, a spokesperson for William Hill told the Mirror Online that the problem would not be fixed easily.
“For a short period there was an issue which saw some mobile phone users automatically directed to our app in the App Store as well as their intended site,” she said.
“This was due to a link wrongly set up by one of our suppliers – this is a common problem on mobile ad content across many industries.
“Once this was identified we acted quickly to rectify the situation. It has now been resolved – we apologise for any inconvenience.”
