Hello my friends, and welcome to This Week in Gambling where we have news out of Sin City as one Resort is on its way up… while another Resort is on its way down. Plus, a man who is truly sponge-worthy, but first, it’s this week’s big story. Most of you know about the Mirage and Hard Rock deal late last year. And that their plan is to tear out the iconic beloved volcano attraction at Mirage in favor of putting up the Hard Rock guitar shaped hotel building right in the center of The Strip. And not everyone’s happy about that. Now, word has come that the Mirage isn’t going anywhere… at least not for another four, possibly five, years.
It seems that the Mirage and Hard Rock transition was just a bit more complicated than they anticipated. So for all of you people out there saying how much you’d love to see that Mirage Volcano show just one last time, well, now you have another four or five years to keep putting that off. But don’t get caught up on the name because when the Mirage transitions to the Hard Rock is not important. Neither is the name on the side of the building. All that really matters is that the Mirage identifies as the Hard Rock. Hey, I didn’t make up the rules!
Also, legendary comedian Jerry Seinfeld and his man hands will be returning to Caesar’s Palace next year on a limited basis… not that there’s anything wrong with that! The man who has been Master of His Own Domain since the early 90s will be performing new material and yada yada yada on these dates in 2024. Mr Seinfeld will take the stage next year with new material for two nights on April 12th and 13th, again on August 9th and 10th, and once more on September 6th and 7th. Tickets are already on sale!
Plus, al we wait for the Mirage and Hard Rock project, we’re also looking at the Dream Las Vegas... or where the Dream Las Vegas will eventually stand. But as of now, construction has stopped. I’m here on the south end of The Strip, near the Welcome to Las Vegas sign and McCarran Airport, so you may hear a plane go over. I’m standing in front of the future site of Dream Las Vegas, which has stopped construction because, well… they need money! To which I reply, join the club! They only need an extra $25 million to get the project going again.
Talks for adding additional funding are underway as ownership tries to secure the money to complete the $550 million dollar project, and turn this five acre lot into a 530 room 20-story resort! Dream officials say the property will also have a spa, several restaurants and nightclubs, a convention center and a casino! There will even be a rooftop pool! Dream Las Vegas was unveiled in 2020… then COVID hit. And groundbreaking took place in July of 2022. So, even though there have been some challenges with financing and how close this property sits to McCarran Airport, there’s still a lot of confidence that Dream Las Vegas will be completed and welcoming guests no later than the end of 2024. Seems like a long time… just not as long as the Mirage and Hard Rock deal will take!
