Calvin Ayre – Tony G has been elected as a member of European Parliament, after his pro-European Liberal Party won two seats, with the PokerNews founder holding most of the votes.
It’s believed that over 400 million people voted in the 8th parliamentary elections to be held, since polling began back in 1979, and Tony G will now serve a five-year term that almost certainly puts him out of the poker frame for the foreseeable future.
“Today, we made history in Lithuanian politics,” Tony G told the associated press, “For the first time Liberals have won two seats in the European Parliament. My sincere thanks go to all voters, those who supported and helped me along the way!”
According to the Lithuania Tribune, the founder of PokerNews and TonyBet, was the wealthiest candidate to stand for election, in Lithuania, with declared assets of over LTL 93 Million ($36.7m), and the Liberal Party was also the wealthiest party.
It’s been an incredible rise to fame for Tony G, who first declared his intent to run for office back in October 2013, and was a member of the Lithuanian Olympic team that was paraded at the opening ceremony in London, back in 2012.
