US Sports Betting Reform Keeps Picking Up Steam

As in years past, football fans who like a little bit of action can pick NFL games at Calder Casino: It’s a far cry from sports gambling, but it’s the best casino option we have. That may change, according to the American Gaming Association and legal experts. They see a day when sports betting is legal at casinos everywhere and point to a case to be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court regarding New Jersey’s efforts to legalize sports wagering. The case could bring about the repeal of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), that Congress passed in…

NBA Optimistic on US Sports Betting Changes

The idea of legalizing sports betting has been floated for years with no imminent change in sight, but NBA commissioner Adam Silver remains optimistic of a change that would make betting legal in the not-so-distant future. According to John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal, Silver says he senses that it could happen “in the next few years” in the United States. “People want to bet throughout the game,” Silver added. “It results in enormous additional engagement with the fans.” Although this may sound like groundbreaking news in terms of a push to legalize sports betting, Silver has long been…

The New Jersey case for US sports betting reform is heading to the US Supreme Court, and the imaginations of many are running wild. Namely, the prospect of the state winning its appeal to allow sports betting also offers the possibility that a number of other states could quickly move to legalize sports wagering. The casino industry’s largest lobbying group in the U.S. is ramping up its efforts to repeal a 25-year-old federal law that bans sports betting in most states. The American Gaming Association on Monday announced the creation of a coalition involving organizations of attorneys general and police, policymakers and others to advocate for the repeal of the ban that the industry says has fueled the $150 billion illegal sports betting market. “The American Gaming Association believes a perfect storm is aligning and now is the time to repeal a failing law,” Freeman said during the announcement. He cited a recent survey…

AGA Says 75% of Americans Favor Legalized Sports Betting

A majority of Americans are in favor of allowing states to decide whether to legalize sports betting, with avid sports fans even more likely to support such a move. That’s according to a survey commissioned by the American Gaming Association, the casino group pushing for regulation of sports wagering around the US. Perhaps the most shocking data: A minority of people are unaware of the current legality of sports betting in the US. The firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner conducted the national survey for the AGA. The questions revolved around people’s attitudes toward sports betting. In particular, it polled sentiment toward…
