New York Sports Betting Bill Back for 2019
The state Gaming Commission will meet to discuss a New York sports betting bill for land-based casinos on January 28, 2019. An agenda published ahead of the meeting states that the Commission will look at proposed rules for regulating the industry. The Commission did not go into detail as to what it will specifically focus on at the meeting, but it will be the first time that the regulatory body will officially discuss potential rules and regulations for the vertical. A 2013 constitutional amendment gave the state’s casinos the right to launch sports betting should the Professional and Amateur Sports Act…
Virginia Sports Betting Bill in January
Simon told Fox 5 DC that given the proximity of the $1.4bn MGM National Harbor casino just minutes north in Maryland, it made sense for Virginia to attempt to claw back some of the dollars that leave the state. “We already see a lot of our residents’ dollars go across the river to MGM. We lose out on a lot of opportunities to capture some of that revenue,” Simon said. “I think there is an appetite for this. I think there is certainly a revenue opportunity in Virginia.” More at iGaming Business
New Jersey Sports Betting Bill Almost Ready
Sometime in the next two months, the Supreme Court will make a ruling on a landmark case which could open the door for a New Jersey sports betting bill, as well as other US states to legalize the activity within their borders. While the SCOTUS decision might not be as cut and dry as some sports betting proponents countrywide would like, a pair of New Jersey lawmakers are preparing for a reality where the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), the law banning sports wagering outside Nevada, is fully repealed. Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling and Assemblywoman Joann Downey recently introduced…
New York Introduces Sports Betting Bill
New York State Senator John Bonacic has introduced a sports betting bill in the state, in anticipation of potential wider legalisation of such activities in the US. At present, Nevada is the only state in which punters can legally place a bet on sporting events, under the laws set out by the federal 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). PASPA makes it unlawful for government entities to sponsor, operate, advertise, promote, licence or authorise betting schemes based on games played by either amateur or professional athletes. However, the state of New Jersey is heading up an effort to…
States Move to Get Ahead of Sports Betting Reform
Sports betting is increasingly getting the attention of state lawmakers. The uptick in legislative activity for traditional sports betting — think point spreads, totals, money lines and prop bets — follows dozens of states that have considered laws specifically permitting daily fantasy sports. New state laws about sports betting had been largely dormant since the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) was enacted. For two decades, PASPA dissuaded states from legalizing sports betting. But that changed in 2012 when New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie signed legislation to permit Nevada-style sports gambling. The NCAA, NBA, NHL, MLB…
Canadian Sports Betting Bill Fails
The Canadian parliamentary effort to decriminalize single-game sports wagering suffered an apparently fatal blow Wednesday night in the face of Liberal Party opposition. The House of Commons rejected single-game sports wagering bill C-221 by a close vote count of 156 to 133. Had it been approved, the bill would have been referred to the House’s Committee on Justice and Human Rights. Now, its hopes—and the hopes of single-game sports wagering in the country—are effectively dead for the foreseeable future. New Democratic Party MP Brian Masse, who introduced the bill, had argued that the passage of the bill would have created…
