Michigan Ready to “Take On The Government” Over Sports Betting

The Michigan state lawmaker who recently reintroduced a bill to legalize sports betting said he is optimistic for his chances of his bill to become law, although it may not happen in 2017. “I understand the federal law prohibits [sports] gambling, but I am the kind of guy that’s willing to take on the government,” state Rep. Robert Kosowski told Legal Sports Report in an interview. Currently a federal law — PASPA — prevents single-game sports betting outside of Nevada while also allowing limited forms of wagering in three other states. This week, Kosowski again introduced a bill that would…

New Jersey Makes Sports Betting “States Rights” Issue

The latest filings in the New Jersey sports betting case represent the last steps before the US Supreme Court decides whether to hear the state’s appeal. New Jersey is hoping the highest court in the land will hear its case on whether the state can partially repeal its own laws to offer sports betting within its borders. It has continually argued that a federal law — PASPA — that prevents most forms of sports betting around the country is unconstitutional. On Wednesday, both Gov. Chris Christie (acting on behalf of the state of New Jersey) and the NJ Thoroughbred Horsemen’s…

New Jersey Sports Betting May be Dead… Forever

New Jersey’s efforts to bring legal sports betting to its horse tracks and Atlantic City casinos suffered another significant — and potentially fatal — setback on Tuesday when a federal appeals court upheld a previous ruling invalidating a challenge to a federal law that limits such gambling to four states. Following a rare hearing in February before a 12-judge panel from the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, the judges ruled 10-2 in favor of five sports organizations, including the NFL and the NCAA. The leagues had argued that a 2014 state law ran afoul of the 1992 federal law,…

NBA Wants Sports Betting Reform but Won’t Help Fight

Sports betting will be broadly legalized in the US in approximately four years and one of its highest profile proponents, the National Basketball Association, will continue to call for a regulatory framework for wagering, American Gaming Association president and CEO Geoff Freeman said Wednesday. Those calls, however, will likely continue to stop short of direct legislative lobbying. NBA spokesman Michael Bass told Gambling Compliance that while his league maintained its position in favor of a law regulating sports betting, it was not going to become more aggressive in directly advocating for such a law. Freeman told those assembled that he…

AGA Says Congress Must Act on Sports Betting Ban

Congressional action appears necessary if sports betting is to be legalized in Atlantic City casinos and elsewhere across the U.S. That’s the conclusion of American Gaming Association President Geoff Freeman following this week’s rejection of New Jersey’s effort to get  a court-ordered change in the 1992 act of Congress that banned most forms of sports betting. The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling invalidated a 2014  New Jersey law that would have allowed sports betting at casinos and racetracks. The court found New Jersey’s action repealing prohibitions against sports gambling violated the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA)…..
