New Jersey Spent $8 Million Fighting for Sports Betting
A day doesn’t pass without eager sports betting fans perusing the periodicals for some indication of where the U.S. Supreme Court stands on the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA). The legislation has been challenged numerous times, most notably by the state of New Jersey, which has now racked up more than $8.5 million in legal fees to try and have the bill overturned. And, the number keeps climbing. The New Jersey Division of Law presented state financial records to the Press of Atlantic City, showing that the Garden State has now spent just under $8.6 million…
Supreme Court: States Can Regulate Sports Betting
We’ve got huge gambling news, as the US Supreme Court on Monday opened the door for states to regulate sports betting. The unprecedented decision will allow the expansion of legalized betting on college and professional sports, and it strikes down the federal law that forbade states from authorizing such gambling. The decision set off a rush among states to put plans in place — a New Jersey racetrack said it would offer sports betting within weeks — and could revolutionize spectator sports, with some envisioning real-time wagering at baseball stadiums on whether the next pitch will produce a hit or…
West Virginia and Sports Betting ‘Integrity Fees’
The efforts of the sports leagues to get money for nothing could be paying off. The West Virginia sports betting bill, which will become effective if/when (when) the U.S. Supreme Court scraps that law that currently prevents states from adopting sports wagering, has been tweaked to provide for a so-called “integrity fee” aimed at compensating those who provide the sports on which bets are placed a piece of the action in exchange for, well, nothing. Via WVNews.com, a tentative agreement has been reached in West Virginia to pay the integrity fee. The funds will come not from the state’s cut…
New Jersey Legislators Oppose Sports Betting Integrity Fee
The US Supreme Court is expected to reveal its decision regarding the federal legalization of sports betting soon (and a possible integrity fee) and New Jersey wants to be ready in case that happens in the upcoming months. A top lawmaker in the state said that New Jersey will not provide integrity fee payments to major sports leagues in any bill that seeks the regulation of sports betting. Deputy Assembly Speaker John Burzichelli said: “That’s not going to happen. We’re supposed to sit down and write a check to the same people who have fought us every step of the…
SCOTUS Sports Betting Decision Delayed
The SCOTUS sports betting decision that could repeal the federal ban on the activity hasn’t been released yet. The Supreme Court heard arguments on repealing the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) four months ago. PASPA currently prohibits sports betting in all but four American states. The hearing took place on the 4th of December 2017, and the general feeling was that the justices were siding with New Jersey in repealing the act. New Jersey was arguing that PASPA violated the constitution and prevented states from deciding for themselves if they wanted to offer sports betting. As it takes…
NBA and MLB Prepare for Sports Betting
The wait for a decision on NJ sports betting continues. A ruling in Murphy vs NCAA is expected any time before the US Supreme Court’s summer recess in June. Looking to cash in as soon as a positive ruling is potentially made are New Jersey casinos, which have been pairing off with sportsbooks to get businesses up and running as soon as possible. But the MLB and the NBA are knocking at Jersey’s door in search of some sort of regulation to protect the integrity of their respective leagues. Over the past few months, representatives from the MLB and the…
