Possibility of Washington State Sports Betting

State legislators are to hold hearings this week on a bill that could legalize Washington State sports betting after decades of it being banned. House Bill 1975, sponsored by Majority Caucus Chair Eric Pettigrew (D) and seven others, calls for professional and college sports wagering to be legalized within tribal gaming facilities. The bill, introduced last Friday, also calls for the legalization of online sports gaming within those same tribal facilities — which would represent a significant shift for the nation’s only state where any form of internet gambling is currently a Class C felony. At least one regulator predicts…

New York Gaming Commission Green Lights Sports Betting Regulations

The New York Gaming Commission on Monday approved a set of proposed sports betting regulations for four existing upstate casinos, potentially setting the stage for the launch of legalized sports gambling in the Empire State. The comprehensive regulations address a wide range of gaming issues from tax and compliance requirements to sports pool licensing guidelines, as well as broad wagering restrictions. The main takeaway from Monday’s meeting, however, centers on a provision that was not discussed. The regulations do not include any guidelines for mobile sports betting, a subject that has garnered intense debate within the state as New York…

NFL Concerns Over Prop Bets

Many Americans in places where sports betting is legal for the first time are beginning to make wagers on the Super Bowl, including some prop bets on the performances of individual athletes. But if the National Football League had its way, bets on things like passing touchdowns for New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady or rushing yards for Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley would be restricted — or even outlawed as too risky and vulnerable to manipulation or cheating. Proposition bets — also known as prop bets — are less popular during the regular season but gain steam…

Governor Supports Massachusetts Sports Betting

Governor Charlie Baker introduced a new proposal on Thursday that aims to legalize Massachusetts sports betting, and tax those bets on professional sports both online and at casinos. The law would allow other entities to be licensed to offer the modality as well. Baker detailed that he would file legislation to allow the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) to license the three casino operators in the state to offer on-site and online sports betting. This legislation would also pave the way for other operators, such as daily fantasy sports (DFS) entities to be licensed for sports betting. “Our legislation puts forth…

Governor Wants Legal New York Sports Betting

New York Governor Cuomo wants 2019 to be special. In fact, he wants this to be the year of legal New York sports betting. “Let’s authorize sports betting in the upstate casinos,” Cuomo said Tuesday early in his State of the State address. “It’s here. It’s a reality, and it will generate activity in those casinos.” New York passed a 2013 law that authorized four upstate casinos to offer in-person sports betting, if permitted by federal law. Then, in May of 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act… the federal statute which restricted…
