Sheldon Adelson: Japan & South Korea are “promising” for development
Las Vegas Review Journal – Officials with high-flying Las Vegas Sands Corp. raved about last year’s financial results and were giddy about potential expansion in Asia during an annual shareholder meeting Wednesday. Sands is on track to add thousands of hotel rooms by the end of next year after it completes a St. Regis Tower and a Paris-themed casino in the lucrative Chinese gambling enclave of Macau, according to CEO Sheldon Adelson. The company also has its eyes on Japan and South Korea. “They present the most promising and meaningful development opportunities in the world,” Adelson said of the Asian…
Sheldon Adelson Is Winning His War Against Online Gambling
Forbes – When Sheldon Adelson’s campaign against online gambling in America emerged last fall, some Internet gambling supporters dismissed his effort as misguided and confused. They pointed to the fact that the entire gambling industry except for Adelson was united in its support of extending gambling to the Internet. Some felt that few would take objections to online gambling on moral grounds seriously from a man who had made a huge fortune off of land-based casinos. Even Adelson’s comment that he was ‘willing to spend whatever it takes,” to stop online gambling was seen by some as a hollow threat…
Las Vegas Sands May Be Hurt By Macau Slump
A second bank said that a Macau slump in gambling revenue that could affect earnings for Las Vegas Sands and other top casinos in the hot gambling destination on China’s southern coast. Nomura Securities on Thursday cut its earlier-raised 2014 revenue growth forecast for Macau from 17% to 14%. The Japanese bank joined Wells Fargo, which, as reported earlier, has been warning for some time that Macau casinos face headwinds in the short term. Sands separately said Thursday that President and Chief Operating Officer Michael Leven will retire at the end of this year. And CEO Sheldon Adelson tried to…
Sheldon Adelson: “Why don’t we legalize prostitution? Drug addiction?”
Vegas Inc – Less than a week after spouting off about online gambling to a crowd at UNLV, Las Vegas Sands Corp. boss Sheldon Adelson stepped out from behind the curtain to speak again. This time, the GOP super-donor rapped with Bloomberg Television’s Betty Lui about his gambling empire in Asia, his crusade against Internet gambling and Ferris wheels. Here’s a look at some highlights from their conversation: “I’m saying, coming from the business, I want to make money from those who can afford it. I can’t tell over the Internet who is underage. I can’t tell who’s got financial…
What Is Sheldon Adelson’s Real Problem With Online Gambling?
Online Poker – Over the past few years gaming analysts have pondered over gambling billionaire Sheldon Adelson’s real motive for wanting to see online gambling disappear altogether from the US. If one was to take Adelson’s explanation on face value then apparently the Las Vegas Sands CEO is primarily concerned with the moral fibre of US citizens and sees online gambling as a potential “societal train wreck waiting to happen.” However, few people believe Adelson’s so-called ethical stance, especially seeing his $40 billion fortune has been built on the money lost by gamblers at his numerous casinos. Furthermore, how much…
Baptists team up with Adelson against online gambling
Washington Examiner – Lindsey Graham is a Southern Baptist. Last month, the senator from South Carolina proposed gambling legislation that was written by a lobbyist for casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson, who was raising money for Graham’s reelection in South Carolina — where two-thirds of Republican primary voters identify as evangelical or born-again Christians. The Southern Baptist Convention, through its resolutions, has condemned gambling as “immoral,” “harmful,” and “devastating.” In the words of a 1996 resolution, the SBC has “frequently stated its opposition to the gambling industry.” So, naturally, a reporter asked Graham about this Adelson-crafted bill. “I would say that…
