Pennsylvania lawmaker introduces bill with penalties for online gaming
Philly.com – As Pennsylvania studies the potential of legalizing online gambling, state Rep. Mario Scavello wants to set up a road block to web-based wagering. The Monroe County Republican on Tuesday outlined a plan to penalize people who gamble online, which is illegal but not punishable in Pennsylvania. Scavello believes online gaming poses a threat to children who could easily find the sites and especially dangerous to problem gamblers who could go all-in and lose from the comfort of their living rooms. “Here again, online gambling is best described as the Wild West. Online, there’s no one around to keep…
Pro-online gaming group launches ad campaign
Politico – Billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson’s mission to ban Internet gambling just got a major opponent — a coalition backed by MGM International and other Washington powerhouses. The newly minted Coalition for Consumer and Online Protection is going up Wednesday with an initial three-week, $250,000 online and print ad buy to campaign against a federal online gambling ban. The ad buy is focused predominately on the Washington, D.C., market, but also will have presence in Nevada. The coalition has also hired some heavy hitters to help them make their case. Former Rep. Mike Oxley (R-Ohio), who served as Financial…
Why is online ‘gaming’ fun but online ‘gambling’ shady?
Futurity – Whether you think online betting is innocent entertainment or a shady activity may have to do with what you call it, according to a new study that shows how industry labels help shape consumer attitudes. “Changing an industry label from gambling to gaming affects what consumers, especially nonusers, think of betting online,” write Kathy LaTour, associate professor of services marketing at the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University, and Ashlee Humphreys of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, in a study published online in the Journal of Consumer Research. “A label like gaming prompts all sorts of…

For the past few months, Poker Players Alliance Executive Director John Pappas has been running up the frequent flyer mileage over online gaming. With federal internet poker legalization prospects seemingly at a standstill, Pappas focused efforts of the 1.2 million-member lobbying organization on various individual state legislative activities. Debate over Internet gaming and online poker surfaced this year in California, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. Pappas is spending part of the weekend at the World Series of Poker in the organization’s booth inside the Rio’s Convention Center. He plans to discuss the various online gaming legalization efforts with the tournament’s attendees. “We…

Massachusetts Online Gaming Amendment Ruled Unconstitutional
From Poker Fuse Law and Regulation: The latest effort to regulate online gaming in the state of Massachusetts has stalled. Earlier this week an amendment to the state Senate budget recommendations for 2014 that would have legalized online gaming was pulled and deemed unconstitutional. The proposal, introduced two weeks ago, allowed for online gambling licenses to be issued to the state’s three casinos and one for its slots-only establishment. Licensees would have been restricted to offering games that did not compete with the state lottery. Tax on gross gaming revenue was set at 20% and interstate compacts would have been…
