Lord Puttnam: Tax online gambling to fund the arts
From The Telegraph The film producer and Labour peer said the UK is in “desperate need” of cultural skills and talent, and taking advantage of the boom in placing bets via the internet could aid the industry. “We will need to find new ways to help support the arts,” Lord Puttnam wrote in the Yorkshire Post. “As many of you will be aware, there is enormous growth in the gambling industry, particularly online gambling, perhaps even, to some extent, displacing money spent on our National Lottery. “I would like to think that the proceeds of a point of consumption tax…

From ABC News Online gambling isn’t just bad, it’s dangerous and immoral: So argues Sheldon Adelson, CEO of the biggest gaming company in the world. “Click your mouse and lose your house,” warns Adelson, Chairman and CEO of the Las Vegas Sands Corp. Casino Mogul Goes On Huge Rant Against Online Gambling
From Business Insider Sheldon Adelson is the CEO of mega casino company Las Vegas Sands. You might think that his business would feel threatened if online gambling became legal, and gamblers no longer had to enter his physical casinos. Thus it’s no surprise that during an interview on BloombergTV, Adelson slammed online gambling as a toxic trainwreck. Of course, he doesn’t say he’s against online gambling because it will hurt his business. He says it’s all about society and the possibility that gamblers will get too hooked. “They are not getting wrong. I just had lunch with Steve Wynn. He…
Illinois to reconsider online gambling
From Chicago Business Language on a long-expected proposal to bring widespread Internet gambling to Illinois finally has surfaced in Springfield, and by all indications the plan will be both highly lucrative and highly controversial. The language was circulated late Tuesday, according to my source, by aides to Senate President John Cullerton, who long has said he wants to legalize online gambling because of the potential payoff in state revenue but has separated the issue from the proposed expansion of casino gambling. Mr. Cullerton’s office didn’t officially confirm that something is coming. But his spokesman promised “details to come” — and…
