New Jersey Sports Betting Launch in Time for World Cup

New Jersey sports betting moved one step closer to reality recently. The State Legislature voted to legalize sports betting, paving the way for casinos and racetracks to take wages and providing the state with a new source of revenue. It is likely a matter of days now before cash can start changing hands at casinos in Atlantic City and at Monmouth Park Racetrack near the Jersey Shore and perhaps take advantage of the global interest in the World Cup, which begins next week, or the National Basketball Association finals. The William Hill company, the most prolific sportsbook in Vegas, will oversee the Ocean Resort’s sports gambling operations. The Ocean Resort is the former Revel Casino, at the north end of the AC boardwalk. Business is contingent, of course, on the New Jersey legislature’s approval of sports betting, which could come within the next week or so. The floodgates to that process were opened when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a…

New Jersey Spent $8 Million Fighting for Sports Betting

A day doesn’t pass without eager sports betting fans perusing the periodicals for some indication of where the U.S. Supreme Court stands on the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA). The legislation has been challenged numerous times, most notably by the state of New Jersey, which has now racked up more than $8.5 million in legal fees to try and have the bill overturned. And, the number keeps climbing. The New Jersey Division of Law presented state financial records to the Press of Atlantic City, showing that the Garden State has now spent just under $8.6 million…
