Now, even longer odds for New Jersey sports betting
New York Business Journal – New Jersey’s plan to legalize sports betting suffered a blow when a federal court ruled that the state’s law conflicts with federal law and, therefore, cannot move forward. According to a report by the Associated Press, a panel at the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals backed an earlier ruling that the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act precludes New Jersey from legalizing sports gambling, since that law only allows that activity in Nevada, Oregon, Montana, and Delaware. The National Football League, National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, National Hockey League, and the National Collegiate…
Christie: New Jersey will appeal sports betting case to Supreme Court
NJ.com – Gov. Chris Christie vowed today to take the New Jersey’s case to legalize sports betting all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court after a three-member appellate panel dealt a setback to the state. The federal appeals court in Philadelphia handed down a 2-1 ruling today that New Jersey could not implement sports betting because the state’s new law conflicts with a federal statute that bans it in all but four states: Nevada, Delaware, Montana and Oregon. The state has the option of appealing the decision to the full Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, but Christie…
Fed court deal another blow to New Jersey sports betting
Star-Telegram – A federal appeals court dealt another blow to New Jersey’s efforts to legalize sports gambling Tuesday, upholding a ruling that the state’s betting law conflicts with federal law and shouldn’t be implemented. The case was heard by a three-judge panel at the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia, and the state could seek to have the case re-heard by the full appeals court. But Tuesday’s ruling more likely means New Jersey’s last chance to legalize sports gambling is to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case. In March, U.S. District Judge Michael Shipp ruled…
Opposition to New Jersey Sports Betting Agenda
Chris Christie was in the news last week because of a radio interview he did regarding New Jersey sports betting, as they’ve made the decision to try and legalize the activity. Sitting in as a special co-host on the Boomer and Carton in the Morning show in New York City, Christie suggested that it was ridiculous that only Nevada is allowed to offer single game sports betting and that the law should be changed to treat all states equally. Not surprisingly Christie disagreed with the lower federal court ruling in March where a judge sided with the sports leagues and…
New Jersey Sports Betting Court Battle Continues
There’s a sports betting court battle brewing, and people have been waiting for it for years. Right now, gambling on sports is legal in Nevada, where the Las Vegas casino sports books hum with activity under the glow of giant boards that show the point spreads. Just about everywhere else, it’s a black market, right down to the office football pool. Now, however, New Jersey wants a piece of the action — and it’s waging that they could reshape sports betting across the country. At stake is the staggering amount of money, up to $500 billion by some estimates, that…
New Jersey final appeal for sports betting
From Philly.com In a landmark case being watched closely by other states, New Jersey made a final appeal Wednesday to be able to offer wagering on pro and college sports. And lawyers for the four major professional sports leagues and the NCAA reiterated their position why New Jersey should be forbidden to do so. The two sides appeared in a packed courtroom for a 11/2-hour session before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia. The three-member panel hearing arguments consisted of Judges Julio Fuentes, D. Michael Fisher, and Thomas Vanaskie. “The leagues have not, and cannot,…
