There Will Be Fewer Atlantic City Casinos

Wall Street experts have seen the future of Atlantic City casinos — and there will be fewer places to play. A panel of analysts speaking at a regional gambling conference Tuesday in Atlantic City said a market that has already lost one casino this year still has too many. Adam Rosenberg, a managing director with Goldman Sachs, said “reducing capacity” is already underway, which he considers positive. Srihari Rajagopalan, a debt analyst with UBS, agreed. “You are seeing the market right-size, which is a positive,” Rajagopalan said. “There are unprofitable casinos shutting down.” Earlier this month, the CEO of Caesars…

Casinos should focus on younger demographic

Mississippi Business Journal – Forbes says Tilman Fertitta is worth $2.4 billion. He became a wealthy businessman by making smart decisions, being opportunistic and having a business-is-business attitude. But even when the owner and CEO of Fertitta Entertainment walks into one of his three Golden Nugget casinos, one thing scares him — the changing landscape of the customers. “One of my scariest things that is young people do not play slot machines,” said Fertitta, who was the keynote speaker kicking off last week’s Southern Gaming Summit in Biloxi. “I go to all these places, it’s not young people playing slot…

Could New Jersey Allow Casino Outside Atlantic City?

Card Player – One lawmaker in New Jersey is still advocating for a casino outside of Atlantic City. According to the Associated Press, at a regional gambling conference Tuesday in Atlantic City, Assemblyman Ralph Caputo reiterated that a casino in the Meadowlands would greatly benefit the Garden State. Discussions of such a possibility have been “growing stronger.” “A casino in north Jersey, to be taxed at 50 or 60 percent, we could do a billion dollars a year in that location,” Caputo said. “We’ve got to be fighting for those customers. That’s what Pennsylvania is doing. That’s what New York…

Asia’s casino heaven looks beyond gambling

The Korea Herald – Macau, one of China’s special administrative regions along with Hong Kong, is undoubtedly enjoying its heyday as the world’s most profitable casino district. But reflecting the awareness that the gaming business alone, as prosperous as it is, can no longer be counted on as the sole pillar for profit, market leaders are pressing to diversify business and lure new customers. The issue will be discussed at the Global Gaming Expo Asia, referred to as G2E Asia, which kicked off Tuesday at the Venetian Macao. Organized by the American Gaming Association and incorporating over 6,000 visitors, the…

MGM is optimistic about 2019 Japan casino build

Reuters – The western Japanese city of Osaka could have a casino resort up and running by 2019, in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, if a bill to legalize casinos is approved by parliament this year, executives of MGM Resorts International (MGM.N) said on Saturday. “If the first bill passes in the fall of this year, you could have something up and ready to go in Osaka by the end of 2019,” Ed Bowers, MGM’s senior vice president for global gaming development, said in an interview for the Reuters Japan Summit. Lawmakers have said they would like to see…
