Scottish Soccer Player Accused Of Betting On His Own Team

Sponsored Story from Wager Web – There have been plenty of betting scandals throughout the years over all sports. The Pete Rose situation is probably what comes to mind when most casual sports fans and sportsbook oddsmakers think of players and betting, but Rose has maintained that he never bet on or against his own team. In the world of European soccer, there have been plenty of scandals in recent years and it has raised its ugly head once again, this time in Scotland where a player may be forced to give up on the game he loves.

Ian Black, a 28-year-old midfielder currently plying his trade for Rangers (who are in Scottish League One now, remember), has been accused by the Scottish Football Association of betting on a number of games in which he was involved in, as well as even more in which he wasn’t involved in. The SFA did some sleuthing and stumbled upon an online betting account which belonged to Black, and that is how they found out about his dealings. Black also played for two other teams during the time in which the alleged wagers took place as he was a member of Inverness CT and Hearts as well.

If Black is guilty of the accusations, he could end up receiving a $1.3 million fine, which is quite large. More importantly, the SFA could make an example out of him and ban the Rangers midfielder from ever playing in Scotland again. That would also probably kill his international career, although Black has only suited up for his country once. There will be a hearing next month to lay out the details of the case and then both sides will proceed forward with the case. Keep an eye on this case closely as other federations will likely start poking into their players’ online betting accounts. Stay tuned.
