Queensland casino could benefit area

The council yesterday unveiled plans for the redevelopment of Horton Park Golf Course to create a new heart for the Sunshine Coast.

The unfunded plans include an international hotel, exhibition and convention centre.

Speaking on the ABC, Mr Jamieson said the council should consider the arguments for and against a casino in Maroochydore.

“Certainly if we want to appeal to the Asia-Pacific, particularly the Chinese market, casinos are seen by them as being an important part of their recreation.”

Clive Palmer, who owns the Palmer Coolum Resort, has unveiled plans for a $2.5 billion development which would include a major tourist facility on the beach and a casino.

Mr Palmer, who is running for the seat of Fairfax, said he would be encouraging the casino to target international tourists only so it did not impact on locals.

Mr Jamieson said it would be up to the State Government to decide whether a casino would be approved.

Mr Palmer has been at loggerheads with the LNP government over his Queensland projects.
