A man found guilty of assisting in the operation of an illegal online sportsbetting operation in the US state of Connecticut has been ordered to serve a 15-month federal prison sentence followed by three years of probation.

Mitchell Engelson of New York pleaded guilty to one count of helping to run an illegal online sportsbook in mid-February and received his sentence late last week from Vanessa Bryant, United States District Judge for the District of Connecticut in Hartford.

The 63-year-old was one of 20 individuals charged with various offences related to their involvement in illegal online sportsbetting and card gambling operations in 2011 following a long-term investigation by the FBI Fairfield County Organized Crime Task Force, the Criminal Investigation division of the Internal Revenue Service and the Stamford Police Department. The case involved the use of court-authorised wiretaps and revealed that Engelson was involved in an operation that allowed gamblers to place wagers offshore using domains including 44Wager.com based in Costa Rica.
