Card Player – Forty eight individuals were arrested in a online gambling raid on New Years Eve in Malaysia, according to reports. The bust happened in the city of Miri, as local police relied on help from Bukit Aman’s Anti-Vice, Gambling and Gangsterism Division. The 48 were arrested at three separate alleged gambling dens. The 48 included workers as well as customers. Police confiscated 312 computers, 23 modems and RM11,367 ($3,460).
The move is part of a revamped effort in Malaysia to combat illegal gambling. Miri police chief ACP Mun Kock Keong said at a press conference after the bust: “We are committed to crippling such activities and those errant people who intend to set up such businesses within commercial buildings or houses will face the music.”
“I know this is a difficult task, but not an impossible one as we do not want low-income earners to continue to fall prey to illegal gambling operators,” Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this week when discussing law enforcement efforts. Running online gambling in and from Malaysia is illegal, but people there, unlike those in America, do have access to the major offshore sites.
