More NBA Player Gambling Issues
Earlier this year, NBA player gambling issues came to light. The league imposed a lifetime ban on Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter, accusing him of betting on games, sharing information with gamblers, and feigning illness to manipulate a wager. Porter had appeared in 26 games for Toronto during this season, and previously played 11 games for the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2020-21 season. The investigation into NBA player gambling revealed Porter’s involvement in widespread gambling activities, a direct violation of league regulations. Allegations included his disclosure of confidential health information to an individual known to be a bettor on NBA…
MLB Players Betting on Baseball a Big Problem
This week it was announced that an infielder for the San Diego Padres has been permanently barred from the league for betting on baseball. Tucupita Marcano violated the MLB gambling policy, and four additional players received suspensions for similar actions: Michael Kelly, a reliever for the Oakland Athletics, and minor league players Jay Groome (a pitcher for the Padres), José Rodríguez (an infielder for the Philadelphia Phillies), and Andrew Saalfrank (a pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks). Each of the four suspended players received a one-year ban from the league, and none are contesting the action taken against them. The decision…

Nevada’s Handpay Reduction Act
You may have heard that the IRS is thinking of raising the reporting threshold for slot jackpots. But even if they don’t, the Handpay Reduction Act being could raise the reporting limit anyway. Representatives Dina Titus of Nevada and Guy Reschenthaler of Pennsylvania have brought forth a bill which would mandate a change if the IRS failed to act on the matter. Titus has been advocating for this regulatory change, introducing bills in 2020 and 2022, albeit without advancing past the committee stage. Recent developments, however, seem to suggest that pushing the Handpay Reduction Act may be unnecessary. In November,…

Nevada to Help Former Mirage Employees
Hard Rock recently confirmed the closure of Mirage Las Vegas, and that they would layoff the 3,000 plus Mirage employees when the resort closes in July. That’s not great news to the families who depend on those jobs, especially after the company had stated the hotel would not shut down during the transition. Now a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification has been filed with the Nevada Department of Employment, Training, and Rehabilitation to help those displaced Mirage employees find new jobs. They will also assist individuals with health insurance options, job training, workshops, and planning a budget. Additionally, the resort…
