Barely a year after achieving licensing in the then nascent Spanish legal online gambling market, Amaya Gaming subsidiary Ongame poker network has announced its intention to withdraw.
Back in June last year proponents of the Spanish liberalisation were promoting the new market as having great potential, boasting 5.7 percent of the total gambling market in Spain (said to be the third largest offline market in Europe) compared to the European average of 11.2 percent.
With expected gross revenues of Euro 82 million during 2012 online poker made up 19 percent of the e-gaming market in Spain EUR‛ one of EuropeEUR™s single largest e-gaming markets that was expected to grow by 15 percent to Euro 504 million between 2012 – 2014.
Induistry observers speculate that Ongame’s decision to quit & shut down its dedicated Spanish network follows the loss of its largest local client Paf earlier this year. Paf launched in Spain on Ongame in June 2012, only to withdraw in February this year (see previous reports).
Other Ongame skins affected by the closure include Goalgaming & associated sites like goalwin.es, pokermambo.es & pokerloco.es.
