State lawmakers continue to move forward a bill that would allow North Carolina sports betting on tribal land, but no where else in the rest of the state. The legislation will likely get a hearing on the House floor in the coming days after passing a final committee Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the House Commerce Committee gave its approval to the bill, which would also allow horse wagering on tribal casino land. The bill passed on a voice vote with two audible dissenting votes — Rep. Keith Kidwell, R-Beaufort, and Frank Iler, R-Brunswick. It now awaits a hearing in the House Rules Committee. The bill passed the N.C. Senate in April with a 43-7 vote.
If it passes the House, it’ll go to Gov. Roy Cooper for him to either sign it into law, veto it, or let it become law without his signature.
UPDATE:
Betting on sports was been legalized in the state, with retail betting the only option allowed. North Carolina sports betting players now have just two options (which is still better than zero), and both go through Harrah’s.
Online and mobile sports bets are not legal… at least not yet. There is Senate Bill 688 (SB688) coming, though. That proposal could be before the House of Representatives soon, so there is some hope the state could still see mobile wagering. And if passed, that bill would most likely become even in a state as strict as North Carolina.
