Ah, how fondly we remember when New York mobile sports betting was passed way back in April. And then, the delays started to mount. Now, as we near the end of the year, the application process drags on.
One has to wonder if the delay could have anything to do with the monstrous 50% tax rate the state plans to implement. However, the State Gaming Commission maintains that they will narrow the list of applicants to a few finalists before mid-December… so that can’t be it.
Still, the Commission did publish their “request for applications” for mobile wagering providers back in July, with plans to approve just two platforms and four operators. Now it’s a waiting game, as a spokesperson for the simply said the “review of applications continues”. Well, thanks for the information.
We do know that interested operators include both FanDuel and DraftKings, along with other ‘big boys’ like Caesars, BetMGM, and FOX Bet. Also in the running are PointsBet, Resorts World, WynnBet, Penn National , bet365 and others.
In the meantime, resident waiting on New York mobile sports betting can simply drive to New Jersey for action. That’s countless millions that New York is losing every month. But it’s their prerogative to take as long as they feel they need.
So… we wait.
