New Jersey is set to begin the next phase of their long legal case aimed at bringing sports betting to the boardwalk of Atlantic City. The judicial panel which will hear oral arguments on June 26 has been announced. SBR expands on the legal hurdles NJ must overcome in today’s iGaming News video show.
Judges Julio Fuentes of New Jersey and D. Michael Fisher and Thomas Vanaskie of Pennsylvania comprise the judicial panel. Circuit Judges listed for the week are Fuentes, Fisher, and Michael Chagares of New Jersey per John Brennan of NorthJersey.com, who SBR interviewed in October of last year.
SBR reported on March 1st that District Court Judge Michael Shipp ruled against the state in their quest to proceed with offering legal sports betting in Atlantic City.
The ruling upheld federal law PASPA – the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 – which outlaws sportsbetting nationwide with the exceptions of Nevada, Oregon, Delaware, and Montana. The major sports leagues and the NCAA vehemently oppose New Jersey’s plan, which is what started the original case in federal court.
