Some state residents believe Nebraska casino gambling would be a benefit, and there is activity to regulate the activity there. It has been legal in neighboring Iowa for years. “Our people are going over doing their gambling, and making them money for their taxes,” said Papillion resident Tim Szynskie. “We believe that it’s time to keep the money in Nebraska and provide much needed property tax relief,” said Mike Newlin, Nebraska Horsemen general manager.
Others disagree with the push for Nebraska casino gambling legalization. “You’ll have an increase in crime, divorces, bankruptcies, abuse, a lot of negatives that come with gambling,” said Pat Loontjer, executive director of Gambling with the Good Life. Right now, people in Omaha just drive across the Missouri River to get to a casino. Those who oppose gambling believe this would create a problem for the entire state. “The whole state of Nebraska would be affected,” Loontjer said.
