Will Las Vegas build the world’s largest observation wheel? The Strip is in the middle of a huge makeover of part of its world-famous stretch of urban neon. The project in question is the land that Caesars Entertainment is transforming into The Linq – once just a back alleyway and a large parking garage, soon to become Las Vegas first pedestrian-only, open-air retail, dining and entertainment district.
The new urban space will be crowned with the world’s largest observation wheel, an adroit feat of symmetrical technological and engineering design. Construction on the Linq started in November 2011. To create the enormous space needed for the Linq project and the world’s largest observation wheel, the company imploded the old O’Shea’s Garage, keeping its bottom section and completely renovated it to match the recently-rechristened Quad Resort & Casino, formerly The Imperial Palace.
The showpiece of the Linq urban project will be it’s 550 foot-high High Roller observation wheel, soon to be the world’s largest observation wheel, standing 107 feet higher than the London Eye. The Linq seems like another gargantuan urban project à la Las Vegas, encompassing a staggering 300,000 plus square feet of lease able retail, dining and entertainment space. But not this Vegas project.
The Linq will become a closed, pedestrian-friendly urban space that revolutionizes the way that walking visitors will interact with the street environment of the Strip in Las Vegas. The world’s largest observation wheel will be a part of that. This story originally appeared on the Forbes website.
