Press Release – Online gambling experts Jackpot 247 have responded to the findings of the first ever industry study in Australia, carried out by Southern Cross University.
An academic at Australia’s Southern Cross University has carried out the country’s first ever study on the world of online gambling, reports Casinomeister. Dr Sally Gainsbury, who has focused on gambling in the past, conducted the study. Findings include the revelation that internet punters are more prone to developing a gambling problem than those who gamble offline.
Gainsbury studied 4,688 Australians who already gamble online, and she concluded that 30% of the respondents experienced low to moderate risks (including being unable to pay bills, spending more time gambling than they intended and chasing eventual losses) compared to just 15% of people who only partake in offline gambling activities.
The research found that half of online problem gamblers only became so after trying internet gambling, with the other half having always had issues with gambling before trying online. The risk of developing problems is greatest for young people. She said: “When you’re gambling online, because it’s electronic, it doesn’t have the same salience as having that $50 note in your hand.”
Another general telephone survey of 15,006 people was conducted three years ago, and it was found that only 8% of respondents had gambled online in the past year. “That’s a massive increase because more than half of these started playing online from 2009 or later,” Gainsbury added.
Jackpot247, who offer a wide range of casino games such as roulette and black jack games online, have responded to the findings of Gainsbury’s research. A spokesperson for the company said:
“It’s important that anyone partaking in online gambling acts responsibility, taking care of themselves and their money so that the experience is as fun and entertaining one as possible. Online gambling is a great way to blow off steam, but people who are prone to these problems should always be careful not to let things get out of control.”
