Des Moines Register – Iowans sounded off on a range of issues under discussion by lawmakers this year for The Des Moines Register’s latest Iowa Poll, revealing widely shared views on several matters. Substantial majorities, for instance, support enhanced enforcement of the state’s ban on texting while driving and favor expanded access to state-funded preschool. Iowans are more divided about ending dog racing at casinos in the state.
On Internet gambling:
RESULTS: Just a quarter of Iowans want to legalize Internet gambling.
ISSUE: Lawmakers in recent years have discussed the possibility of legalizing — and taxing — Internet poker, which is readily available online but illegal and unregulated under state law. A 2011 study from the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission suggested legalized Internet gambling could generate $13 million to $60 million for game operators and tax revenues of $3 million to $13 million.
IOWANS’ VIEW: Mark Smiley, 56, of Granger said he opposes all gambling, whether it’s in a casino, at a racetrack or on the Internet. He believes Iowa should be decreasing, not increasing, the availability of gaming and wagering.
