The “Economic Impact of British Racing in 2013″, a study released by the British Horseracing Authority and Deloitte, indicates that horse racing in Britain had an overall impact of £3.5B on the British economy in 2012.
The study, which was published by Sports Business Daily, said that the amount was just a slight rise since the last study was completed in 2009. Once inflation is figured in, however, a small contraction of 1.2 percent is evident.
Racing remains the second most popular sport in Britain, with 5.6 million people attending the races in 2012. Not including the London Olympic and Paralympic Games last year, horse racing accounted for four of the top 10 attended sporting in Britain in 2012. According to the study, the racing industry employs more than 22,000 people in full- or part- time jobs.
