Governor Legalizes Indiana Sports Betting

Indiana sports betting will become legal under a bill signed by the governor this week. That bill also approves the construction of two new land based casinos in the state.

Republican Eric Holcomb signed off on the legislation in the final hours left to act, after lawmakers reached a deal just before the close of this year’s state legislative session.

So far 2019 has been good for sports betting reform, as Indiana joins Montana and Tennessee in moving to legalize the activity. Six other states moved quickly last year following a U.S. Supreme Court decision opened the door for regulation.

Indiana sports wagering could start in September, with bets placed by anyone at least 21 years of age in a land based casino or via mobile devices after registered with casino in the state.

Governor Holcomb said Indiana’s casino industry faced greater competition as neighboring states have legalized more forms of gambling.
