iGaming Business – The English Football Association (FA) national governing body has put forward a new proposal that would ban participants in the county’s top four divisions from betting on any match or competition in the world. The proposal, which would come into effect from the start of the 2014-15 season, would also see a worldwide prohibition on betting on any other football-related matters, such as the transfer of players or appointment of managers.
The proposal received a unanimous recommendation from The FA Council yesterday (Wednesday) and The Football Regulatory Authority last month. The English Premier League, English Football League, Professional Footballers’ Association, League Managers’ Association and Football Conference were also consulted on the changes.
In order for the new rules to come into force, the changes would need to be agreed by FA shareholders at their AGM in May 21. Current FA rules state that no participant can bet on a match or competition in which they involved that season, or which they can or influence, or any other football-related matter concerning the league they play in.
Participants are also prohibited from using or passing inside information for betting purposes. The rule changes would also come into force for participants below the top four divisions of the English game.
“The FA constantly evaluates its rules and regulations to ensure that they meet the needs of the modern game,” FA director of football governance and regulation, Darren Bailey, said.
“It is important to stress that the rules form only one part of the overall framework for the regulation of betting and maintaining the integrity of the English game.
