iGaming Business – Information and advisory services provider the NPD Group has recorded a 25.4% rise in the sale of computing devices in the US in the 12 months up to November 2013.
Using its Distributor Track and Commercial Reseller Tracking Service, the company reported that a total of 14.4 million desktops, notebooks and tablets had been sold through US commercial channels in the period.
The increase of 25.4% far eclipses the 3.1% rise recorded in the previous year.
Tablets experienced the most significant growth during the last year with sales having increased 49%, while sales for notebooks and desktop sales grew 28.9% and 8.5% respectively.
Sales of tablets also accounted for more than 22% of all personal computing devices sold commercially in the period up to November 2013.
Windows tablet sales almost tripled and Android tablet sales grew by more than 160% while Apple iPad sales accounted for 59% of the entire tablet market.
“The market for personal computing devices in commercial markets continues to shift and change,” NPD’s vice-president of industry analysis, Stephen Baker, said.
“New products like Chromebooks, and reimagined items like Windows tablets, are now supplementing the revitalisation that iPads started in personal computing devices.
“It is no accident that we are seeing the fruits of this change in the commercial markets as business and institutional buyers exploit the flexibility inherent in the new range of choices now open to them.”
The rise of computing device sales comes shortly after the news that digital purchases have also been driving gaming expenditure in the US during 2013.
