Wimbledon is one of the biggest and most unique tennis competitions in the world. Since it’s grand opening in 1877, Wimbledon has seen some phenomenal tennis talent and set some prestige tennis records.
Pete Sampras a well-known and praised athlete has won Wimbledon’s Gentleman’s Singles titles for seven consecutive years (1993 – 2000) tied with William Renshaw. Sampras has only been surpassed once by Roger Federer, who won 20 major singles titles which is the most by any man in history whilst holding a record of 8 Wimbledon titles.
Wimbledon has also seen it’s youngest winner Boris Becker, back in 1985, who was just 17 at the time. He made a huge splash into the world of tennis and later won 49 career singles titles.
However, it’s not all about the Singles titles wins, there have been records set by gender, Taylor Dent who is currently holding the record for the fastest male serve at 148mph and Lucie Hradecka holding an amazing fastest female serve at 125mph. Wimbledon also has a record for the longest tennis match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut in 2010 which lasted an outstanding 11 hours and 5 minutes!
For Wimbledon betting 2018, Betfair tennis odds will give a good indication to whether or not we’ll see any new tennis records broken. Roger Federer is currently the bookies favourite to win in the Men’s match. However, for Women’s tournament bookies seems to think the Women’s tournament is pretty open, Serena Williams, Garbine Muguruza and Petra Kvitova are the bookies favourite to win, but all have rather long odds.
With such a big event, is it really surprising that approximately 1 billion people are viewing in around 200 territories and that Wimbledon has the largest catering capacity compared to any other sporting event? With around 2,220 catering employees serving around 330,000 cups of tea and coffee, 320,000 glasses of Pimm’s, 86,000 ice creams and 76,000 sandwiches.
Wimbledon is more than just tennis, it is an experience and one that cannot be missed. There are however, strict guidelines to follow. If broken there will be consequences, as demonstrated by British F1 Star Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton received a ban from the Centre Counrt’s Royal Box back in 2015 because he didn’t follow the dress code of a jacket and tie. This goes to show, that anyone can be punished for these rules despite their status.
