Cairns – The proponents of a $4.2 billion mega-resort at Yorkeys Knob will open a second display office to cater for the immense community interest generated by theproject.
Since opening last week, more than 1000 people have visited Aquis’ Cairns Central shop to find out more about Hong Kong investor Tony Fung’s plan to build the resort on 343ha of land north of Cairns.
Mr Fung’s son, Justin Fung, last night met about 30 members of the Yorkeys Knob business community to discuss the proposal.
He said there had been a positive response to the project after a “solid week of engagement”.
“The feedback has been for the most part very positive and we’re encouraged, but the work is just beginning,” he said.
Mr Fung said they would soon open a second display shop at Varley St, Yorkeys Knob, to increase the dialogue with locals.
“We’re doing whatever we can to engage the community, inform and deliver feedback so we know what all the questions and concerns are and make everyone comfortable,” he said.
Mr Fung said most of the environmental concerns raised by the public could be answered in the proposal to the State Government.
A new Facebook page set up by Aquis Great Barrier Reef Resort to discuss the project has already attracted almost 1800 “likes”.
Mr Fung said the company would continue to use social media to connect with the community.
“Whatever the vehicle may be, through the internet or through the galleries we’ve set up, we’ll do whatever we can do to engage the community, inform and deliver feedback so we know what all the questions and concerns are,” Mr Fung said.
Mr Fung said engineers were “hard at work” putting together the environmental impact statement.
“We’re hoping everything can be done promptly,” he said.
