Online poker players in Nevada and Delaware may get Interstate poker and be competing against each other as early as this summer. After forging the nation’s first interstate agreement last month, Delaware Governor Jack Markell and Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval are aiming for the new online poker scheme to be up and running in just a few months.
Previously, the end of 2014 had been mentioned as the target, but that projection has been shortened. Both states could use the increased liquidity, as both are in the lower third of the nation in population. Delaware ranks nearly at the bottom of the 50 states, coming in ahead of only a handful of others.
With the Multi-State Internet Wager Agreement now in force between Delaware and Nevada, Sandoval has invited other states to take part and team up with the pair for Interstate poker. Perhaps 10 or so state legislatures are said to be contemplating online gambling legislation and the Nevada governor is more than happy to lend a hand.
Here are some Interstate poker updates that have occurred since this story was published:
- Apr 6, 2022: Michigan has been approved for entry into the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement. That makes it official that it will join New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware in sharing traffic, but the process may take several more months to complete.
- Apr 4, 2022: Ontario’s new ring-fenced market is now live, though some operators, including PokerStars, are temporarily remaining offshore and global until approved for launch by the regulator.
- Mar 24, 2022: WSOP has launched in Michigan. Its delayed entry is likely due to wanting to wait until shared traffic is imminent.
- Feb 8, 2022: Entain has pulled PartyPoker out of Russia to show its commitment to regulatory compliance. Part of the reason it’s doing this is to maintain its good standing with Nevada regulators, perhaps with the intention of including the Sagebrush State in a future BetMGM Poker US Network.
- Jan 31, 2022: iGaming Ontario confirmed that regulated Ontario poker sites will not be able to share traffic with sites outside the province.
