After a week of speculation, Florida sports betting has come to a halt following a decision from Federal Judge Friedrich in Washington, DC. Her ruling finds that the state compact with the Seminole Tribe is a violation of federal Indian gaming law. Las Vegas Tribal Gaming has been in the headlines a lot this past year. First, it was Mohegan Gaming that agreed to run the casino at the new Virgin Hotel located where the Hard Rock used to be. The ink isn’t even dry of the Seminole Gaming Compact with the state of Florida, but already there are political challenges being raised. That agreement paves the way for sports betting in the state. But the mayor of Miami Beach has voiced his concerns that the agreement is corrupted, and he wants the Federal Government to kill the deal. Sports betting in Connecticut, including online betting, has been approved and signed by the Governor… but now we must wait for approval by the Federal Government. But why is Federal approval needed? Because the deal involves the states Tribal Gaming interests. The Mohegan Sun, operated by the Mohegan Tribe, and Foxwoods Casino, operated by Mashantucket Pequot, have “exclusive rights” to many forms of gambling in the state. Oklahoma Tribes Ditch Fight Over Poker Site
A pair of Oklahoma tribes have ditched plans to pursue an online poker site. They had sued the federal government over the site, but that also appears to be over. The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes had brokered a revenue-sharing deal with Oklahoma for a PokerTribes.com online poker site. The federal government objected not to the online poker activity itself, but to the nature of the deal between the two parties.
