DraftKings & FanDuel New York Betting Issues
When sports betting in New York was passed with a 51% tax rate, we knew it would lead to problems. Now, both DraftKings and FanDuel New York are saying they could abandon the market if that tax rate isn’t lowered to something more realistic. The CEO of DraftKings, Jason Robins, described the situation as “unsustainable” while speaking at a recent joint legislative hearing. He pointed out that while the tax rate is already the highest in the nation, it’s even worse than it appears since fees and licensing make the state’s effective tax more than 70%. The President of FanDuel,…
Massachusetts Sports Betting Violations
What’s it been? Like, a couple of weeks? And right out of the game, we’ve got violations of Massachusetts sports betting regulations from several casinos! Well, it’s nice to see things off and running so quickly. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission says that since regulated wagers went live on January 31st, there have been three casinos within the state which have run afoul of the state ban for betting on in-state college games. First, Encore Boston Harbor was found to be accepting wagers on Boston College women’s basketball games. The, Plainridge Park casino was found to have taken bets on a…
Big Fines for DraftKings and Barstool in Ohio
Sports betting has only been up and running in the state since January 1st, but already we’ve seen huge fines for DraftKings and Barstool Sports in Ohio. All together, the Ohio Casino Control Commission has collected $900,000 in fines just this year for a variety of violations. First, the fines for DraftKings stem from a direct mail campaign in the state which ended up being sent to some young adults under the legal gambling age. It seems that some of those on the list were not yet 21 years old. There were also violations for not including a problem gambling…
William Hill Embezzlement Scheme in Nevada
A minor crime syndicate has been broken up in Nevada, as a William Hill embezzlement operation was detected and stopped up by the Nevada Gaming Control Board recently. Unfortunately, this was not until the criminals had pilfered over $100,000 from the company. Control Board Agents were tipped to the thefts back in December, when William Hill reported potential fraud to the agency using internal information from their sports betting kiosks. And while the full impact of the crime has not been disclosed, the company (which is owned by Caesars) has well over a hundred sportsbooks locations in the state. There…
William Hill Nevada Operations Back Up
The amazingly bad timing of the William Hill Nevada app and kiosks crashing on Super Bowl Sunday was a blow to the company. Not just from a PR perspective, but in a massive loss of betting volume. And now that the app and betting stations are back up and running, it’s going to cost them even more. The Nevada Gaming Control Board is investigating the cause of the outage. It is certainly within their purview to issue a fine… if they felt it was appropriate. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen. But the company is going to…
Record Super Bowl Betting in 2023
You just knew this was coming! With gambling expansion still on fire, there was more Super Bowl betting this year in America than at any time in the past. Who’s surprised? Most likely not too many people… but it’s still news, and still nice to hear about. The numbers have been crunched by our good friends at GeoComply, a geolocation company making sure bettors are where they say they are. And according to their numbers there were 100 million bets made om the big game last weekend. That’s 25% more than last year! It may have helped that this year’s…
