Can Horse Betting Go Mainstream?

Zemanta Related Posts ThumbnailSponsored Story from Wager Web – People have been betting on thoroughbred horse racing for centuries (they don’t call it “the sport of kings” for nothing), but in today’s age, it really doesn’t move the needle as far as mainstream coverage goes. Outside of the Triple Crown races (the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes) and possibly the Breeders’ Cup meet, horse racing doesn’t usually earn a spot on the frontpage of mainstream sports outlets. But one is trying to change that and it could also net a few new players.

Fox Sports 1 is really making a push to challenge ESPN’s place in the pantheon of sports media, and they announced that their network will be airing graded-stakes races, at least 10 for the first year. But they are also going to include some information about wagering in their broadcasts, which will be good for those that have no idea how to go about sports betting in the world of horse racing. There are a lot of numbers involved in handicapping, and with the increase in the use of stats and sabermetrics in sports such as baseball and basketball, Fox Sports 1 is hoping that a few people will get more into horse betting.

And that will help the sport tremendously as betting is basically the main source of revenue for horse racing. There are a lot of people that want to go to the horse track and lay some bets, but then they run into terms such as “trifecta” and “exacta” and get scared off by it. Fox Sports 1 looks like they’re going to be tapping into a market that other sports outlets have never thought of, and if they can get a few big names involved, they could draw a lot of extra customers.
